The Lineage Graph assesses the reproducibility of any given Result. Reproducibility can be guaranteed when Capsules and Pipelines are versioned, and when Data are kept internally on the platform.

## How the Lineage Graph works with the rest of the Code Ocean platform

Track computational work done in Compute Capsules

Compute Capsules record all computational work performed within them. Results generated are automatically recorded, along with the input Data used to create them.

Track the output of bioinformatics pipelines

Pipelines can incorporate output from multiple different Compute Capsules, Data sources, and other Pipelines. This is all tracked by the Lineage Graph.

Track source data used in the generation of results

Code Ocean tracks all Data used in computational work. Data and Results can be accessed through the Data dashboard, allowing you to keep track of what data was used where and when.

Can you always guarantee reproducibility?

Yes, if all source [data](/content/product/data/index.html) has been imported and made immutable. If you’ve used an external data source that is subject to change, reproducibility cannot be guaranteed.

Can you click into each node to see details?

Yes. You can interact with every node on the Lineage Graph. Click on any asset that you have access to and explore the full details of which version was run, when it was run, and who by.

Can we use this to connect to an external lineage tool?

Yes, using our [API](/content/product/api/index.html), you could connect to your own instance of an open-source tool, e.g. [OpenLineage](https://openlineage.io/).
